Presser Feet and Pressure Settings

Having the right presser foot for your sewing machine and adjusting the pressure setting on the presser foot can make a big difference in how easy or difficult it can be to quilt by machine.

For decorative machine quilting, you’ll need your zigzag foot with the wider opening (opposite, left). Be sure to change the needle plate for wider stitching also.

A walking foot, also called an “even feed foot,” puts pressure on and moves the top fabric, just like the feed dogs do on the bottom fabric. Whenever possible, we use our walking foot (above, right) for all straight stitching: piecing and the straight stitch quilting on pages 45–49.

Pressure setting adjustments can be found on many machines but not all. Check your sewing machine manual for where the adjustment mechanism is for your machine. On older machines it’s usually on the top of the machine. On newer machines it’s generally on the side of the machine head.
